Inmedius® S1000Dinstructor™ Transforms Publication Data to SCORM® Courseware
Granular Data Reuse Tool Creates Consistent, Robust e-Learning Material
Pittsburgh, PA – September 27, 2007 - Inmedius, Inc. today announced the immediate availability of Inmedius S1000Dinstructor, the first software solution to define and deliver a system to unlock the S1000D™ data within a Data Module, reorganize and transform it into SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model) courseware that is consistent with the technical publication content. SCORM is a collection of standards and specifications for Web-based e-learning that defines communications between the client side content and a host system, which is commonly a function of a Learning Management System.
Developers of training material utilize S1000Dinstructor to author training content from complex S1000D™ technical data, publish SCORM-conformant output, and to manage both. A seamless transformation solution, Instructor also supports the incorporation of data from outside of S1000D; including movies, audio, Adobe® Flash animations, and trainer-authored content.
“The problem for developers has been the lack of a defined standard for transforming S1000D™ data to SCORM,” explained Sean Rushing, US Director of S1000D™ Products and Services, Inmedius. “Presently, reusing data within an S1000D™ module is a labor-intensive cut and paste process. Inmedius S1000Dinstructor provides an automated, disciplined process that takes one, or many, S1000D™ objects and transforms them into SCORM-conformant output. The process allows the author to access and reuse smaller sub-sections of the S1000D™ information, and to insert training multimedia objects and relate them to S1000D™ content.”
Instructor’s granular reuse model accesses data at a level that is even more refined than an S1000D™ module, ensuring consistency between the SCORM courseware and technical publications. Authors are able to create content from the S1000D™ source data; transforming as much data and objects as possible to meet their training requirements. Users can reuse the S1000D™ information directly as entire modules, or use only specific elements within a module. This level of granularity allows trainers to customize courseware at a very detailed level; such as providing training on a sequence of steps within a larger equipment repair procedure.
The system’s flexible output capability supports customization and a SCORM-structured organization that may include specific training flows like sequencing and navigation. All output files are SCORM-conformant, in the form of HTML packages.
Instructor links to the Inmedius® Horizon™ content management system for validation and reference checking, report generation, and storage of training content and SCORM-compliant output in a generic repository environment. Horizon facilitates professionally managed content and supports XML, SGML, S1000D, DITA, ATA, DocBook and numerous military specifications and customized Documentation Type Definitions (DTD).
